Hayward is located between Union City and San Lorenzo on the East Bay in Alameda County. It currently hosts a population of 153 104 people, making it the third largest city in Alameda County and the sixth largest city in the San Francisco area. Other suburbs that have been incorporated into the city are Mount Eden, Russell City, and Schafer Park.
The largest shopping center in Hayward, Southland Mall, offers a variety of stores including the mega centers Sears and Macy’s. Some of the major chains that are located in Hayward are Home Depot, Office Depot, and Target (which is located at the Skywest Commons Mall). There is a large variety of manufacturing companies that are located in Hayward as well, such as Kobe Steel (which operates Kobe Precision), and PepsiCo (A bottling group facility). The soft drink company Shasta has chosen to make Hayward the home of its headquarters, as has Gillig Corporation (A school bus manufacturer), Andersen Bakery, and Dust Networks.
Bianchi Bicycles, Bianchi USA, Costco Business Center, Nhey kagawa, Manheim San Francisco Bay, and Azuma Foods International all have a facility or factory in Hayward.
Rob Simms, the founder of Simms’ Custom Cycles, chose Hayward to be its headquarters. Chaosium, a role-playing game publisher, is also based there.
City hall has had three locations in Hayward. The tallest building in downtown Hayward is one of the old City Hall buildings, which is currently abandoned. The Hayward Public Library is also located downtown, along with the Hayward Area Historical Society, white runs the museum. Before claiming for bankruptcy, the main offices for Mervyns department store chains were located there as well. The only movie theatre in the city, the Cinema Place complex, can be found downtown.
